I give Microsoft the benefit of the doubt, because I think that they have to prioritize by user demand the features that are in OneNote 2016 that they want to add to OneNote UWP while also considering adding features that aren't in OneNote 2016 in order to stay competitive with OneNote's competitors. I do, however, wish that OneNote UWP included the advanced search functionality of OneNote 2016 where if I search my notebook for something, then press Alt and O, my search results get pinned and I can see some of the parts of each page that contain my search words without having to click on any of the results. I'm not sure if I share your sentiment perhaps I only do basic notetaking (mostly type, occasionally write and draw with my stylus, and have once or twice inserted audio recordings). The reason behind the current shitty navigation on desktop is that they want to make a consistent experience for people using OneNote on desktop, tablet, and phone. Download Microsoft OneNote for macOS 10.15 or later and enjoy it on your Mac. It's utterly frustrating the dance you have to make back and worth between OneNote 2016 and the UWP version to do anything beyond basic note taking. Right-click a section tab and go to Section Color on. I think that Microsoft wants students to get in the habit of using OneNote, so that they continue to use it as adults. Click and drag the section tabs left or right to reorder them. Every tweak or feature they add to the UWP version is targeted at that use case. From all the press and news I've read about OneNote in the last few years it seems like Microsoft's only focus when it comes to OneNote is the classroom.
